Despite lower attendance this winter, the future of the Railway Station Tourism Centre is starting to look a little brighter.
That’s because a proposal has been put forward by the newly-formed Madawaska Valley Culture and Heritage Society to take over operations of the railway station. The proposal, if approved, would see the society handle the day-to-day operations of the centre, while still being owned by the township.
As of now, the railway station is only open on weekends and only had 23 people come through between Halloween and late December. While council is in support of the idea, they would like to see some adjustments made to the proposal.
Council has stated in the past that they have no plans for closing the Railway Station, but a shortage of staff has resulted in reduced operating hours.
