Major snowmobile trail is now mostly open

A snowmobile trail that connects Barry’s Bay to Algonquin Park is now open to ride on.

Most of the railway bed trail has been given the green light by the Opeongo Snowbirds Snowmobile Club. Although recent rain caused many local trails to be closed, President Cheryl Reid says it actually helped get the trail open.

Reid also says some portions of the trail are still a little icy, and have only been opened with limited availability.

She also says it’s important to stay safe. Although the maximum speed limit on the trail is 50 kilometres an hour, Reid says snowmobilers should ride according to the conditions.

The trail that connects Algonquin Park to Lake St. Peter is also open with limited availability. However, many other trails remain closed. Reid says it will take quite a bit of snow to get them all open, but is still hopeful for a good sledding season.
