Police warning of credit card scam in the area

Police are once again warning the public to be cautious about credit card scams after a suspicious phone call was reported.

The Renfrew OPP says one person reported being called by someone who claimed to be from the VISA credit card company.  The resident reported that the person knew their name and the first four digits of their credit card number, but that they asked for the rest of the digits, security numbers and expiry date.  The resident says they hung up and didn’t give out any personal information.

Police say you shouldn’t be tricked by this type of a scam because all VISA credit cards have the same first four numbers.  You can report fraud to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or antifraudcentre.ca.
