Police remind you to protect yourself on social media

The Renfrew OPP is reminding you to watch out for fraud on social media.

This comes after an area-resident contacted police because they had been locked out of their Facebook account. The victim reported that they had given away personal information when trying to enter a contest on the site.

Constable Janice Sawbridge says it’s very important to be careful about the personal information you give out over social media. She says answering questions like your grandmother’s first name or your favourite type of food can put you at risk.

Sawbridge says you should contact your bank if you think your personal information has been compromised, and change your online passwords. She says the best passwords include letters, numbers, and punctuation marks that make sense to you.

You can find out more on the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website.
