Turtles Hatching Later Than Usual In 2017

After a longer wait than usual, turtle hatchings are starting to emerge from their nests.

That’s according to Kelly Wallace, an off-site volunteer from the Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre, who says 2017 was a worse-than-usual year for turtles being injured on roads.

Wallace says that as of September 30th, nearly 900 turtles had been admitted to the trauma centre, nearly 90% of them being vehicle-related.

While the hatchlings this year are later than usual, Wallace says it’s still a positive sign to see young turtles after such a tough year on them.
