MNRF; Know Your Target Heading Into Moose Hunting Season

Moose hunting starts on Saturday in the North Hastings area and you’re being reminded to properly identify your target before shooting.

That’s the message from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Bancroft District Conservation Officer Shane Brownlee says, every year, moose that were not properly identified are shot by mistake. There are rules for what type of moose you can hunt, in order to manage the local populations.

Brownlee says calves stand about four feet high at the shoulder, and weigh up to 400 pounds. He says there are also other features to help you properly identify a calf.

Brownlee says adult moose will be much bigger.

Brownlee says it’s important to know these differences, and know what you are allowed to hunt. If you mistakenly shoot the wrong type of moose, you are asked to report it to 1-877-847-7667. You will still be fined for reporting it, but Brownlee says penalties will more severe if you don’t.

Moose hunting season starts on a Saturday in North Hastings, although it would typically start on a Monday. It will run until October 27th.
