For the second day in a row, Basil Borutski has tapped loudly on the glass of his prisoner’s box, and waved notes around.

Borutski faces charges of first-degree murder in the deaths of Anastasia Kuzyk, Carol Culleton, and Nathalie Warmerdam in Madawaska Valley two years ago, and has remained silent up until this point.

Today in court, Kuzyk’s sister Eva took the stand, and testified she was in her sister’s Wilno home on the day of the murders, and remembered seeing a man walking around with a gun. She testified that she had heard a shot, and started running until she was picked up. Audio from a police call made by Eva was also played in court.

Under cross-examination, the sister was asked questions on Borutski’s behalf by the lawyer appointed to him to ensure he gets a fair trial. She testified that she didn’t recognize the man with the gun, and could not remember if she saw a gun-shot wound. She also testified that she had been aggressive with the man, who did not appear dangerous.

At the end of Eva’s testimony, Borutski pressed more notes on the prisoner’s box.

Court also heard from the foreman of a construction crew who picked Eva up on the day of the murders, and one of the first OPP officers to respond.

The trial resumes Monday.
