A friend of Carol Culleton’s told the court he feared for her safety.  Jeff Shelp testified yesterday in the first-degree murder trial of Basil Borutski.

Borutski is accused of murdering Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam in 2015.

Shelp testified Culleton had enlisted the help of a handyman, who she referred to as Baz or Basil, to fix her cottage so she could sell it.

Shelp told the court Culleton said she was not romantically linked to Borutski, however, he did not like it when she was in close proximity to other men. Shelp said Culleton believed it was important to be his friend, but told the court Culleton became scared when Borutski started showing up at her home, despite not being told where she lived.

He testified that two or three weeks before she was killed, Culleton started getting a lot of texts and emails from Borutski, and that she was trying to distance herself from him. Shelp said he told Culleton she should not go to her cottage alone.

Under cross examination by the lawyer appointed to Borutski to ensure he gets a fair trial, Shelp testified that Culleton had spoken to Borutski and said he did not mean to scare her and would not hurt her.

OPP officers also took the stand to tell the court about a number of handwritten signs found scattered throughout Culleton’s property on Kamaniskeg Lake. The officers also found a digital camera with pictures of the sign taken the day before the three women were killed.

Borutski remains silent despite representing himself during the trial, and a not guilty plea has been entered on his behalf.
