A letter sent to Carol Culleton the day before her death was read in court during the trial of Basil Borutski.

Borutski has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam.

Culleton’s brother testified the letter, postmarked the day before the murders, was delivered to Culleton’s cottage by neighbours who had been collecting her mail. The postmark indicated the letter had been mailed in Palmer Rapids, where Borutski had been living.

The letter spoke of Culleton’s cottage, her late husband, the love the writer shared with her, and wanting to reconnect. The writer also speaks of an unidentified false friend who separated the two.

The court also heard from the real estate agent who found Culleton’s body, along with police and paramedics who discovered a number of handwritten signs at Culleton’s cottage, and a corkscrew engraved with the words ‘Basil’ and ‘Xmas 2009.’

Borutski remains silent despite representing himself during the trial. A not guilty plea has been entered on his behalf, and a friend of the court has been assigned to make sure he gets a fair trial.
