Communities in North Hastings could be allowed to introduce a tax for those staying at local hotels.

As part of the province’s budget, municipalities in Ontario have the ability to introduce a ‘Transient Accommodation Tax,’ to raise funds for tourism marketing efforts. Hastings County Economic and Tourism Development Manager Andrew Redden says this would allow municipalities to put a tax on places like hotels and bed and breakfasts, and charge those using them.

Redden says tourism marketing efforts are currently being paid for through property taxes and other municipal revenues. He says money raised from the potential new tax would be put towards the municipality’s ‘destination marketing organization.’

Redden says some questions need to be answered before the county recommends that any municipality pursue the ‘Transient Accommodation Tax.’ He also points out that some tourism operators could be concerned this would deter people from coming to the area because of the extra cost to do so.
