The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit wants you to know how to prevent, test and treat hepatitis.

This comes as World Hepatitis Day is coming up on Friday.

The health unit says there are three forms of the serious virus which can lead to liver failure, cancer, or cirrhosis. Hepatitis A is spread through close contact with an infected person, or by consuming contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B is passed through infected blood and other body fluids. Hepatitis C is passed through blood-to-blood contact.

The health unit says Hepatitis B and C are the most worrisome as they can cause serious liver diseases. To avoid spreading the virus, you are being reminded not to share drug equipment or personal hygiene items, and avoid unprotected sex.

Anyone who believes they may have contracted the virus is urged to get themselves tested.
