Yakabuski Says Minimum Wage Increase Not Widely Embraced

The Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP says there continues to be mixed feelings across Ontario about a proposed increase to minimum wage.

The province has recently announced it plans to increase minimum wage to $14 an hour by 2018, and to $15 in 2019.

MPP John Yakabuski travelled across Ontario with a committee to look into the issue. There were 190 verbal submissions made to the committee. The meetings have now wrapped up, but Yakabuski says there continues to be differing opinions on the subject.

Yakabuski says some businesses are concerned that, because of how quickly the changes would be put into effect, they won’t be able increase their revenues enough.

Yakabuski says the next step is for the committee to look into the bill clause-by-clause in August before the provincial legislature reconvenes in September. At that point, the government will determine when it will be reintroduced for second reading.
