No mosquitoes in Madawaska Valley or Algonquin Park have tested positive for West Nile for several years. Because of that, Renfrew County and District Health Unit Environmental Health Acting Manager Mike Grace says the region does not share the same concerns about the virus as in Haliburton County.

This comes after the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit has reported this year’s first case of mosquitoes testing positive for the virus.

Meanwhile, Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health Senior Public Health Inspector Andrew Landy says no mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in the North Hastings area either.

Landy says it’s important to cover up when outside and put on insect repellent with DEET because there could be more mosquitoes this year because of all the rain.

Renfrew and Hastings counties’ health units also remind you to get rid of standing water on your property in order to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
