Some Haliburton County mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus

For the first time in 2017, some mosquitoes in Haliburton County have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit says usually there is no confirmation of the virus until later in the summer, so the early finding is a reminder that you need to be vigilant and protect yourself from mosquito bites while outdoors.

The health unit recommends you cover up by wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved shirts, jackets, long pants, hats and socks while outside, and by applying insect repellent containing DEET. You should also eliminate mosquito breeding areas on your property by getting rid of standing water, keeping bushes and shrubs clear of overgrowth and debris, turning compost piles regularly, and ensuring window and door screens fit tightly and do not have holes in them.

There have been no human cases of West Nile in Ontario so far this year. Most people who get the virus don’t show any symptoms, but some may develop high fevers, severe headaches, muscle weakness, and stiff neck. More severe symptoms include confusion, tremors, and sudden sensitivity to light. Anyone who thinks they may have contracted West Nile is urged to seek medical attention.
