Firefighters in the Madawaska Valley have responded to two grass fires in less than a week.

Fire Chief Corwin Quade says the most recent fire claimed about three acres just off of Opeongo Line in Barry’s Bay before it was brought under control.

He says the property owner has been charged with careless burning.

Burn permits cost $10 and can be purchased from the township or fire halls, allowing burning between evenings and nighttime.

Quade says the most recent fire almost spread to a nearby home.

Careless burning fines can sometimes cost as-much-as $1,000.
