Future of Hastings Highlands Electoral Ward System in Question Following Petition

Hastings Highlands now has less than 90 days to pass a by-law about the future of its electoral system.

Council has recently been looking into an imbalance within its current ward system, which sees the Monteagle Ward get the same council representation as the Herschel Ward, despite having half the amount of eligible voters.

CAO Pat Pilgrim says a petition has now been given to the municipality, asking that council act on potential changes to the electoral system.

If a by-law is not passed, those who filed the petition can apply to the Ontario Municipal Board, which could mean the current ward boundaries are re-divided or dissolved.
