Seismologist says Pembroke area earthquake larger than usual for region

An expert on earthquakes says last night’s one near Pembroke was rare for the area.

Stephen Halchuk is a Seismologist with the Canadian Hazards Information Service for Natural Resources Canada.  He says no damage or injuries have been reported in the earthquake, which hit south of Pembroke Tuesday at 7:35pm.   Halchuk says the earth’s crust is weak in our region, causing up to 150 small earthquakes per year.

He says there are only a few with a magnitude of 3.8 locally every year.  Halchuk says if an earthquake strikes, you should take cover under strong furniture until the rumbling stops.  He suggests getting prepared for emergencies like earthquakes by visiting Emergency Preparedness Canada at www.getprepared.ca.
