The Township of Madawaska Valley’s Council will be looking closer at the municipality’s alcohol policy.
Concerns were raised in last night’s meeting by Councillor Shelley Maika over the lengthy policy.
Maika says the policy could be restrictive for non-profits and charities if they’re looking to hold events with a bar.
The policy deals with the responsibility of the township and event hosts, as well as accountability and complying with provincial laws.
It’s derived from the city of Hamilton’s legislation, which the province, attorney general and police forces endorsed as one of the most comprehensive.
While some concerns were part of provincial legislation which can’t be changed, council did agree it should be open to discussion.
The township’s CAO Craig Kelly says there have not been any issues brought forward by event hosts in the past.
The policy is likely to make it into next week’s Recreation, Heritage and Culture Committee meeting for further review.
