UPDATED: Hwy 62 reopened after MVFD extinguish bush fire near old ski hill

Highway 62 has reopened after the Madawaska Valley fire department battled to put out a bush fire near the old ski hill between Barry’s Bay and Combermere this morning.

Fire chief Corwin Quade said the fire started about two kilometers west of a 66-acre fire they put out yesterday.

The fire this morning burned about six acres and has been completely extinguished.

Quade said it was in a remote area and the department is not sure what caused the fire to start.

He said the fire was one of four they got calls about this morning, and they’ve had to respond to numerous fires over the last couple days.

This has been due to people burning garbage and brush, as well as downed power lines due to high winds this morning.

Quade said they’ve had mutual aid from Brudenell-Lyndoch-Raglan, and the Ministry of Natural Resources has assisted with helicopter flyovers to locate these fires.

He added today’s rainfall should help with the dry ground conditions, but encourages people to remain vigilant.
