Madawaska Valley getting ready for inaugural Flannel Fest

Madawaska Valley’s first ever Flannel Fest is fast-approaching, with a week of events happening throughout the township.

Recreation and Community Services Manager Hannah Gutoskie said they wanted to host a community celebration in midwinter, because this time of year is often a slow one.

“Summer, we’re all busy, we’re outside, there’s stuff to do. Fall is busy with people getting back to school. Holiday season is busy, there’s also lots of stuff going on. And this is kind of that quiet season, January, February, March, where it’s kind of tougher to get outside, there’s not much going on.”

Gutoskie said this is the perfect time of year to get people engaged and going out to the township’s outdoor rinks.

She said the township saw great interest from community groups and organizations to hold Flannel Fest, and activities range from games at the legion to dramatic performances at the train station to live music at the community centres.

Gutoskie said a lot of the events are free, but any proceeds from events with fees will go directly to the group that organized it, not the township.

Some contests are already underway, but Flannel Fest events officially get started on Feb. 11.

The full schedule is available on the township’s website.
