Madawaska Valley Could Take Pro-Active Approach to Cutting down on Distracted Driving

The Township of Madawaska Valley is looking to bring hands-on education to students on the dangers of distracted driving.

Council pushed through a resolution to support the Leave the Phone Alone Campaign and possibly bring in demonstrations to its schools.

Councillor Carl Bromwich says the idea has a great deal of support from across the county and has funding readily available.

Aside from the county, the local school board, the Renfrew County Health Unit, local EMS and the OPP are all supporting it.

The idea is to put students in a simulation to show exactly how dangerous texting and driving is.

The simulations would be followed by a demonstration by local fire departments showcasing teams cutting wrecked vehicles involved in collisions.

The Ministry of Transportation will be heading up the funding for the campaign.

Bromwich says Killaloe-Hagarty-Richards is also looking at bringing in the program.
