Wildfire smoke prompts air quality warning for Barry’s Bay and surrounding areas

Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for Barry’s Bay and surrounding as wildfire smoke blankets the region.

The agency says smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility through today and possibly into Friday.

Residents are being advised to limit time outdoors, especially vulnerable people such as young children, seniors, those who are pregnant and those with existing health conditions.

Mild symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or coughing may occur.

Officials recommend keeping windows and doors closed, using air filters or portable air cleaners indoors, and wearing a well-fitted N95 respirator if outdoor exposure is unavoidable.

Environment Canada urges residents to monitor local air quality reports and check in on those more at risk.
