Road Safety Week: OPP urge caution on the roads

Canada Road Safety Week officially launched today, marking the start of a national seven-day campaign focused on reducing injuries and saving lives on the country’s roadways.

The campaign targets impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and failure to wear seatbelts.

With the theme “Road Safety — Every Road. Every Day. Everyone,” the initiative encourages Canadians to drive responsibly — not just during this awareness week, but every day.

The Bancroft detachment says officers will be out through the week promoting safety.

“Our officers will be making sure we do our best to contribute to safety on our roads, highways, trails and waterways,” said Sgt. Trevor Pitts of the Bancroft detachment.

OPP Const. Dan Cook also emphasized the importance of staying focused while driving.

“Distracted driving is one of our top contributors to collisions in the area. Drivers shouldn’t be looking at anything but the road,” he said.

Bancroft OPP say they encourage everyone to take part in the campaign by making “smart, safe choices behind the wheel.”

Bancroft Deputy Fire Chief Matt Musclow echoed the message, citing the significant number of collisions that have occurred in our area in the last year.

“Not only fatal, but major life-altering accidents,” he said. “We encourage everybody, when they’re on the roads up here or anywhere, to obviously obey all the rules — but also just use your common sense, right? Don’t be passing when it’s not safe to do so. Don’t be looking at your phone. Pay attention to the road.”
