Affordable Housing Strategy on Docket for next Committee Meeting

An affordable housing strategy is something the Township of Madawaska Valley could be developing sooner than later.

Concerns over taxes were a big topic of discussion in yesterday’s Development and Property Committee meeting if the municipality is to adopt a plan.

Mayor Kim Love says a healthy, regulated growth of the township will keep taxes down, quickly pointing out remaining static would do little to address rising costs.

Committee Chair Faith Archer says increasing the tax-base both commercially and residentially through that growth could bring more stability and a better climate for a potential plan.

Since social housing was downloaded onto a municipal level the committee is concerned that if it doesn’t adopt a solid plan, one might be given to them by the province.

CAO and Town Clerk Craig Kelly says there have already been some developers interested in the area and a well thought-out stance on affordable housing could attract more.

The township’s Development and Property Committee will be discussing the idea further in the next meeting on September 22nd, the public is both welcomed and encouraged to attend the meeting.
