Environmental Concerns Brought Up Over Possible Transfer Station in Hastings Highlands

Hastings Highlands has a few more steps to put in place before the North Baptiste and Sand Bay Landfills can be turned into Waste Transfer Stations.

Project Engineer for BlueMetric Environmental Ltd, Iris O’Connor, says the Sand Bay site still needs approval from the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change before it can become a Waste Transfer Station.

Council was also recommended to move forward with a land-use application with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as the site falls onto crown land.

O’Connor says the municipality should continue towards a closure plan for the North Baptiste Landfill, but also recommends a bedrock well be added.

This would be as a precaution to see the environmental impact of the landfill on the bedrock ground water.

There may already be an impact to the water at the Papineau Lake Landfill site, although further testing is still needed.
