Think Turtle Initiative has launched their Milkweed Extravaganza a fundraiser that not only will help pollinator’s such as butterflies and bees, but will also support the volunteer-run conservation organization.
Wallace says the initiative, which works tirelessly to protect turtles and their habitats, met an unexpected set-back recently when their storage shed that houses essential supplies was badly damaged.
“The shed that we keep all of our nest protector supplies in collapsed under the weight of the snow. So that’s where the funds are going to get directed to, because unfortunately, we have a shed for this (turtle protection efforts).”
Wallace says she will be at this weekend’s Seedy Saturday event in Maynooth with seeds available to purchase including a variety of ‘red’ milkweed.
“It’s native to to Ontario and it flourishes in wetter environments like damp meadows, marshes, the edges of ponds, wetlands. And we’re hoping there are people out there that think, ‘hey, we could introduce this to our properties’ It’s sort of a nice way to add some vibrant color, and also help to fill out an important ecological niche.”
The seeds are from trusted Ontario supplier Bee Kissed Seeds.
The price is $4.50 per package (30 seeds, including sowing instructions).
