Suspension of RED Program a Blow to Rural Ontario Communities

The province has announced it’s suspending a program which rural communities, like Madawaska Valley, use for economic development and strategic planning.

Mayor Kim Love says even though the Rural Economic Development Program was for smaller programs, it still played a vital role for the township.

The funding is now being channeled into the Jobs and Prosperity Fund which goes into programs with minimum costs of around five-to-ten million dollars.

Love says the township doesn’t have economic development programs that large and now the funding which would previously help the community is out of reach entirely.

She says it will affect programs like business and retention, where previously extra funding would help to off-set tax payer dollars.
