‘Adding complexity’ Killaloe airport being used for elite military training this week

You might notice a few more tanks on the road and choppers in the sky this week.

The Department of National Defense wants people to know that their Patrol Pathfinder course will be training at the Killaloe Airport from Tuesday to Sunday.

The public may see soldiers training at the airport with weapons, but no live rounds will be used.

Soldiers arrived on Tuesday and will be practicing “sighting airstrips behind enemy lines.”

CH-146 Griffon helicopters  may also be seen in the area as part of the training.

The military says that all soldiers will be briefed in advance of the training and monitored by course staff while training on civilian grounds.

They add that “the use of non-Department of National Defense land, outside of the range training area, adds a level of realism and complexity to the training that enhances its value and better prepares soldiers to serve Canada and its interests at home and abroad.”

According to their website, the mission of Patrol Pathfinders is to come in ahead of military forces and prepare various types of landing zones that missions may require.

They also perform humanitarian assistance and evacuation of non-combatants. You can read more here.
