OPP warn of scam in the area, resident loses thousands

OPP are warning residents of a scam that has recently surfaced in the area of South Algonquin resulting in a resident being victimized for nearly $10,000.

OPP say that the scammer calls and pretends to be from a financial institution or credit card company and then falsely tells the victim that their credit card and/or banking information has been compromised.

The scammer creates a sense of urgency and then asks for the caller to confirm their bank card and/or credit card number, PIN number and personal information.

OPP say that the calls are often made late in the evening or early in the morning with the hopes of catching the potential victim off guard.

In this most recent case, a “courier” was sent to the victim’s home to retrieve the allegedly compromised cards with the promise of later replacing them, which never happened.

OPP remind everyone to verify the legitimacy of any caller before providing personal information over the phone and to directly contact their bank or financial institution should they receive information that their credit card or banking information has been compromised.
