Renfrew County District School board held a flag raising ceremony this week to honor the start of Truth and Reconciliation week.
The board says the week holds great importance as they are committed to reflecting on the history and lasting impact of residential schools, colonialism, and the ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous peoples in Canada.
“As a school community, we stand together to recognize and honour Indigenous communities’ resilience, strength, and cultures, while committing to the vital work of reconciliation.”
The school board also emphasized the flag raising was not just a ‘symbolic’ gesture, but a reminder of the responsibility to actively engage with the 94 Calls to Action, “To listen, to learn, and to advocate for the rights and dignity of Indigenous peoples. Today, we reaffirm our dedication to creating a more just and inclusive future for all.”
