Parents face challenges as school year starts with no school busses in Renfrew County

Parents are having to carpool, re-negotiate working hours and turn to online schooling as they try to navigate the current lack of school bussing in Renfrew County.

One parent of a student at Madawaska Valley District School in Barry’s Bay said she will now be travelling over two hours a day to get her son to school.

“I’ll be signing him out 30 minutes early tomorrow by phone to avoid the rush and see which works best for us.” she told MooseFM. “Sort of our own staggered pick up. Especially with travelling 30ish minutes each way, two trips a day… the easier we can make this the better!”

She also said regardless of the challenges, the parents she has spoken with are supportive of the school bus drivers and hope that they reach an agreement that gives them a fair wage.

She went on to say that, despite the disruption families are facing, she was impressed with how “extremely organized and courteous” the parents were at school drop off on Wednesday morning.

In the face of the bussing situation many are reaching out on social media to find ways to help each other, with one even starting a ride share group: Madawaska Valley District School ride share 2024 | Facebook

In a recent letter sent to parents, the Renfrew County school board has stated students will be given an online learning option. Chrome books will be sent home on Wednesday for those who need them.
