On the water the ‘sky is the limit’ at this years KAPOA poker run

Those looking for a chance to be out on the water, support local healthcare AND celebrate the Olympics should head out to the Kaminiskeg Area Property Association Owners (KAPOA) poker run on Saturday.

Organizer Bruce Wilmer says that people often have fun decorating their boats and will be getting into the spirit with their docks as well.

“We’re hoping that people will join in the spirit of the event, which for the last two years we’ve done with decorating boats… You’re free to interpret whatever that means. It could be costumes, we’ve had pirate ships and Viking ships, so the sky’s the limit”

Wilmer says he also hopes people embrace this years timely theme:

“So we’ve asked the dock hosts to dress up or decorate their dock in some kind of Olympic theme. We honor the best dock and the best boats on the beach between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The boats will spend the day travelling between seven ‘host’ docks, collecting a playing card at each one to complete a poker hand. Wilmer says boats don’t need to rush, its a great way to spend a leisurely day on the lake.

According to Wilmer you don’t even need a boat to take part and everyone is welcome.

“There’s quite a few virtual boaters and people that are donating. They can come to the boat launch in various ways and watch the boats. So that’s probably the best spot if you’re not actually out on the water. You’ll get to get a chance to see them all come in.”

There will be a BBQ, music and more at Hinterland beach at 4 p.m. when the boats start arriving. The event will wrap up at 8 p.m.

Each year the KAPOA Poker Run raises funds for the purchase of crucial medical equipment required by the St. Francis Memorial Hospital in Barry’s Bay.

This year’s goal is to raise $30,000 to help purchase telemetry capabilities in the emergency department.
