Health Unit Advocating Awareness During Drowning Prevention Week

With this week being recognized as National Drowning Prevention Week, our local health unit has some tips to keep our kids safe.

Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health says children under five are most likely to drown in a backyard pool.

Drowning is also the second leading cause of death for children under 10 in Canada.

We’re being advised to build four-sided fences around all pools, leaving no way to access them.

They should be four feet high, hard to climb, with a self-closing gate you can lock.

By doing this, the health unit says seven of 10 home-pool drowning incidents can be stopped.
