Attention Geocachers: New find at Eagles Nest  in Bancroft

A new geocache has been hidden on top of Eagles Nest Park thanks to students from the Northern Environmental Research Development (NERDs) program at North Hastings High school.

Geocaching is an outdoor activity where people or groups go looking for hidden containers using GPS or apps on their phone.

Hiding the cache were students and teachers from the Nerds program. After NHHS students kicked off the day with an impromptu line-dance, one student, Steven, explained to My Bancroft Now what happens when you find a geocache container.

“You take the log book out, you fill in that you found it, then you take one of (the) trinkets out and put one of yours in, and so that way the cache always stays stocked with things”

My Bancroft Now asked another student, Trinity, what happens if someone stumbles upon a geocache, not knowing what it is.

“There’s a piece of paper either taped to the outside or inside of it. It gives information for people who find it. It describes what it is, what you do now. If you’re not geocaching and you happen to stumble upon it, then you’ll know what it is. And maybe you actually get into geocaching.”

Bancroft Stewards of Eagles Nest Park Director Ian Hendry was on site that day, giving permission on behalf of the park for the cache to be hidden, as a representative of the land must give the okay before hiding.

Students also explained that geocaching is a great draw for tourism and that using landmark sites like Eagles Nest creates locations with lots of engagement.

While My Bancroft Now has seen the geocache in its hiding spot, you will still need to get out your GPS to find it as we have been sworn to secrecy.
