Board reviewing new name ideas for consolidated school

A survey that asked for new name suggestions for a Barry’s Bay consolidated school led to several ideas, which are now being reviewed.

That from Renfrew County District School Board officials, as a process to re-name Madawaska Valley District High School-Sherwood Public School nears an end.

The schools, which share the same Waska Way building, were previously under separate administrations, but they merged ahead of this school year.

Principal Jennifer Schooley says the ideas submitted showed, to her, how important the school is to the community.

“People really love this school and they feel connected to it and they feel there’s a lot of history here,” she says. “And I think they want that history to be reflected in everything we do, moving forward.”

The ideas are now being reviewed through closed-door meetings. But a report on the name change is expected to go to the board of trustees in January, at which time information will become public.
