Traveller’s journey to Algonquin Park raising funds for wildlife protection

A nature enthusiast met with Madawaska Valley officials Thursday, while on the homestretch of a journey from the Adirondacks to Algonquin Park.

The trek mimics the route a well-known moose made several years ago and is to raise awareness and funds to protect the corridor for wildlife.

Jamie Findlay says he hopes to finish his Pilgrimage for Nature Trek on Saturday, about a month after starting from Newcomb, New York. It’s raising funds for the Algonquin to Adirondacks Collaborative and his own employer, Nature Canada.

“A lot of people don’t know about the corridor,” he says. “They live in the region, but they don’t know about it. It’s a gem in a lot of ways. If (the Trek) inspires people to get out and explore, and motivates people to protect these areas, that would be a success for me.”

Findlay’s journey has been along a combination of trails, near where U.S. researchers believe a collared moose named Alice travelled in the 1990s.

Findlay says Alice’s surprisingly long journey emphasized that work must be done to ensure animals have safe passageways as they travel.
