Butterfly Release event hopes to help grieving people heal

You still have time to support St. Francis Valley Healthcare Foundation’s Memorial Butterfly Release event.

Butterflies can be purchased up until Friday, July 14. They’ll be released on Sunday, July 30, when the event takes place at Water Tower Park in Barry’s Bay from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Foundation director Erin Gienow explains the annual event is touching, because people are releasing butterflies in memory of loved ones they’ve lost.

“It is quite emotional,” she says. “We have a keynote speaker who starts off the program, speaking about grief. When you release the butterflies, it’s a spectacle. Everyone feels so supported, because they’re all going through the same emotions.”

The cost is $35 for one butterfly or $100 for three. People have the choice of releasing their butterflies at the public event or doing it privately on their own.  The proceeds will support palliative care needs in the community.

More details on the event are on The Foundation’s website.
