A new sport debuted at the Paul J. Yakabuski Community Centre on Wednesday.

Pickellball is now offered there every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

The growing racquet sport has been available locally for a few years now, as a group of local enthusiasts were playing at Madawaska Valley District High School.

They worked with the Township of Madawaska Valley to bring the sport to the community centre, where taped lines have been used to create courts, with the ice now out.

One of the local enthusiasts, Julie Tuer, says she loves pickelball because it’s an inclusive sport.

“It’s a sport that most people can pick up easily,” she says. “It crosses over from ages to gender to fitness level. People seem to be able to pick the sport up fairly quickly.”

Pickelball will continue at the Centre on Wednesdays until mid-August. Participants just pay a drop-in fee of $5.
