Algonquins of Pikwakanagan have reached an agreement with two nuclear organizations that will allow the First Nation to have a say in how the environment is protected.

The agreement is with Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories.

Pikwakanagan Chief Greg Sarazin says the deal means the First Nation now has “significant say in operations, incorporating traditional knowledge and values, while protecting Algonquin Rights and the environment.”

The agreement means Pikwakanagans will have representation on a new Guardian Program that monitors and provides feedback on environmental concerns around operations.

Atomic Energy and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories are both located in Chalk River, north of Pikwakanagan territory.

A statement by the three parties, called it a “historic long-term agreement.”

Sarazin also said “the agreement is the best path forward” as the First Nations seeks to “protect Mother Earth and the safety of future generations.”
