Pickleball coming to Yakabuski Centre

Madawaska Valley council says play ball! Pickelball, that is.

Council approved a report from Township Recreation Co-ordinator Hannah Gutoskie to bring the sport to the Paul J. Yakabuski Centre this summer.

The move, made at the May 2 meeting, allows a group of local pickelball enthusiasts to rent the space on the floor of the area for $45 per hour at times throughout the summer.

Members of the roundtable, including Mayor Mark Willmer and Coun. Mary Blank, said they felt it was a good move, because the small racquet sport is growing in popularity.

Gutoskie says, for now, the club will just tape lines on the floor to set up courts. Her report said that while the move brings some costs to the municipality, there’s also “an appetite for increased recreational offerings” at the arena.
