The Major Lake Road Bridge in South Algonquin Township is expected to remain closed for today and tomorrow, as the Madawaska Valley river continues to rise.
About 30 residents near the bridge were asked to evacuate Monday night, after Ontario Parks decided to close the bridge, which is just outside Algonquin Park.
“It’s just being closed as an abundance of caution,” says Bryan Martin, South Algonquin Chief Administrative Officer. “But certainly the water is rising, there’s probably 12 inches until it starts to crest over the bridge.”
The Township is also experiencing flooding on Highway 127 to Proven Line. The road is accessible from the south entrance off Highway 127.
Also, Madawaska Street is closed at the junction of Algonquin Street to the end. Bennet Road is also closed, as are part of Old 127.

Madawaska River rising
Meanwhile, flooding is causing concerns in areas north of Bancroft.
A Ministry of Natural Resources official says levels in the Madawaska are expected to continue to rise, with the peak expected late next week.
MNR’s James Tinajero says water levels are above average for this time of year, but significant flooding is not anticipated.
Still, he says residents should be cautious around waterways, as water is moving fast.
And snow is still melting in areas further north and east of the area. MNR has issued a Flood Warning for the Ottawa River. That warning affects people in the Lac Coulonge area and downstream to Arnprior.
Parks closed in Bancroft
Meanwhile, Bancroft Bancroft has closed two parks today, due to rising York River water.
Cenotaph Park downtown and Churchill Park, along the river in the north end, are both closed.
At Churchill Park, the river is spilling onto the grass and into the parking lot.
