A new health care delivery model that started in Renfrew County will become permanent.

Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MPP John Yakabuski announced the province will commit $3.2 million for the Renfrew County Virtual Triage and Assessment Centre.

The centre was born out of the pandemic, when more people needed virtual health care services.

It evolved and began to not just offer COVID-related services, but services to people throughout Renfrew County who didn’t have family doctors.

Since March 2020, it’s provided nearly 80,000 virtual assessments. Officials say the centre eases pressure on hospitals as it diverts 1,000 patients from emergency departments each month.

In announcing the funds, Yakabuski called it an “exceptional” program.
