Winter Games part of provincial mandate to promote sport: Minister

The province has put about 1.4 million of taxpayer dollars into the Ontario Winter Games – but it’s well worth the investment.

That from Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, Neil Lumsden.

In a one-on-one interview with www.mybarrysbaynow.com he says that the Games are important because they’re showing young people the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

He adds that promoting sports is a key component of the the Doug Ford Progressive Conservative government.

“We’re showing people that healthy lifestyle is important,” he says. “Kids involved in sports is important. Adults that get moving and go to recreation centres is important. I think, if nothing else, people should take away that the province and our Premier knows that sport and recreation plays a big part in having a healthy and successful province.”

Lumsden, a Hamilton MPP, was speaking ahead of the second portion of the games. Several competitions taking place throughout the County from Thursday to Sunday.

A second opening ceremony, planned for Thursday night, has been cancelled, due to freezing rain in the forecast.
