A monument to Madawaska Valley’s high-flying hero will be grounded for the rest of the winter.

But it should be back up by the spring.

The model of the CF-105 Avro Arrow flown by famous pilot Janusz Zurakowski is being taken down so it can undergo repairs.

Beth Hildebrandt, of the  Zurakowski Park Committee, said the Home Hardware in Combermere has agreed to take on the project, which involves covering some holes that have built up over time on the fiberglass body.

The airplane has been placed proudly at the park, on the Opeongo Line, since 2003.

It pays homage to the man who tested supersonic aircrafts for Canada and later settled in the area. The airplane has remained a monument to Zurakowksi’s life, from the time he died in 2004.
