Bark Lake Disposal Site filling quickly

Madawaska Valley needs to look at new waste diversion options, as its Bark Lake Disposal Site is seeing a dramatic increase in use, which is limiting its lifespan.

That message comes from a delegation to council earlier this week, which revealed some eye-popping stats.

The amount of trash coming into the site has tripled since pre-COVID times, according to a consultant’s report.

The report says that up until 2019, the site was getting about 3,400 metres of trash per year, but the annual fill rate is now at 10,400 cubic metres per year.

It’s likely due to more people living in the area full time and because the Township used it after some recent demolitions projects.

The consultant said the township should prepare to expand or open a new landfill site and encourage new diversion options.

The increase in usage has the landfill’s projected life expectancy suddenly reduced from 33 years to 11 years.
