Renfrew County Paramedics now have ultrasounds

Renfrew County residents can take pride in knowing they have one “ultra” advanced paramedic service.

Renfrew County Paramedics recently became certified to use new “pocket size” ultrasound equipment, which will allow for patients to be treated quicker than ever.

The technology allows paramedics to assess a patient more thoroughly before even going to a hospital.

Nolan says, for now, 10 community paramedics who visit patients at homes are using the equipment. But in time, the program will roll out so that the technology is in every ambulance used in the county.

The program is called Point of Care Ultrasound and the Renfrew group is believed to be the first in Canada to be using the technology.

Renfrew Paramedic Chief Michael Nolan says the equipment allows paramedics to detect issues such as kidney stones, gall bladder or internal bleeding issues, before the patient is even at the hospital.
