The Madawaska Valley Food Bank is closing in on its goal of raising $35,000 by the end of the year, after the 106.5 Moose FM Spirit of Giving Radiothon held last Friday.

Food Bank President Paul Thompson says the Radiothon raised about $16,000 – its best result ever – from generous donors who stopped in at Valu-Mart and Metro.

The Barry’s Bay Legion, Lions Clubs from Madawaska Valley and Palmer Rapids, as well as businesses such as Yantha Backhoe & Trucking and Yantha Enterprises were among those who made big donations during the Radiothon.

“Our goal for November-December this year is $35,000,” says Thompson. “And we started the Radiothon day at about $16,000. By the end of the day, we had $32,000. We’re really overwhelmed by the support we got from the community that day.”

With a few thousand dollars to go in the fundraising goal, Thompson stressed that people can still make donations of money, or food, at the two grocery stores, or make financial donations online. The Food Bank can accept e-transfers made to [email protected]

Regardless of what happens though, the food bank has a need to fundraise all year long.

“We’re hoping to continue to raise money,” Thompson says. “The $35,000 is just part of our $100,000 budget for the year. We have a lot of work to do, to ensure we’re sustainable all year long. This has been a great help towards  that goal.”

More information on the Food Bank is posted on its Facebook page.
