Health unit offers tips for safe holiday eating

Nothing ruins the holidays quite like a case of food poisoning, so take precautions as you head into the festive season. That message comes from the Renfrew County District Health Unit.

It says foodborne illnesses are caused by bacteria that is sometimes found in raw foods, unwashed produce and unpasteurized milk, juices and cider.

The unit offers several tips to reduce the risk of illness. That includes always washing fresh fruit and vegetables with clean water. And never placing cooked food back on the same plate that previously had contact with raw food, unless it has been cleaned.

Also, use a thermometer to ensure foods are fully cooked to the recommended internal temperatures. And to throw out perishable foods that have sat at room temperature for more than two hours, because bacteria can grow rapidly.

More information is on a Holiday Food Safety fact sheet posted on the health unit’s website.
