Renfrew County Public Health searching for new top doc

Renfrew County and District Public Health Unit hopes to soon have a new top doctor in charge.

Dr. Ian Gemmill will take over as the Acting Medical Officer of Health in the new year, as the contract of the current Acting MOH, Dr. Robert Cushman, is not being renewed.

The health unit announced the change in a statement released Thursday.

Gemmill is a veteran public health official, who has worked in leadership roles in Kingston and Ottawa. He will serve as the Acting MOH for the period of January to April 2023.

The statement quotes the health unit’s chair, Ann Aikens, thanking Cushman for his work and saying his leadership will be missed.

The release also said he provided “exemplary public health leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic” and great support during “very uncertain times.”

The health unit says it’s now recruiting to hire a new, permanent and full-time Medical Officer of Health.
