Madawaska Valley was able to maintain an impressive voter turnout in Monday’s election, at least relative to other municipalities.

Unofficial results show that just under 60 per cent of eligible voters turned in their ballots. The township had a similar rate in 2018.

The average voter turnout rate among Ontario municipalities was about 36 per cent this year. That’s down two percentage points from the 2018 rate which was the lowest turnout since 1982.

The Township  has been able to keep a high average, while staying low tech. Many Ontario municipalities have shifted to phone and internet voting systems, but  Madawaska Valley continues to have a mail-in voting system.
